How Can I Get My Dual Monitor Setup Working Properly?

Hey everyone! I'm really hoping someone can help me out here. I'm trying to set up dual monitors to boost my productivity with both my HP work laptop and my personal MacBook Air M2. I borrowed a Targus USB-C Docking Station with Quad 4K capabilities to see if it would do the trick before I buy one myself. However, I'm having trouble getting both monitors to work at the same time. The docking station recognizes both monitors, but only one actually displays anything. I've tried using both HDMI and DisplayPort cables but still no luck. I'm pretty overwhelmed by all the different connection types like HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt, and I'm just looking for a simple explanation to get things working. I'd appreciate any insight on how to make this dual monitor setup function properly! Thanks a ton!

Have you tried connecting the docking station to your other laptop? That might help determine if the issue lies with your work laptop's drivers or settings.

I did connect it to my HP, and while it recognizes both external monitors, only one works again. It’s similar with my MacBook where it only shows one monitor.

Make sure you're accessing the correct display settings on your MacBook and that you're using the appropriate ports on your monitors. Sometimes, it's just about making sure everything is set correctly.

I’m using an HDMI to USB-C cable for both monitors. The docking station connects via USB-C, and each monitor is connected through one of the docking station's HDMI ports.

Have you checked if you've downloaded and installed DisplayLink drivers? Sometimes they are crucial for the docking station to recognize both monitors properly. That might solve your issue!

Yes, I downloaded it from the Targus site since that's the brand I'm using. It should work the same regardless, right?

Let's simplify things: connect a power strip, plug both monitors into it, and ensure your docking station is also powered if needed. Once everything is on, right-click on your desktop and go to display settings to see how it's configured. Make sure to switch from 'duplicate' to 'extend desktop' and check that both monitors are recognized. Often, the second monitor just needs to be set as an extended display, even if it appears black at times.

Thanks for that! I’ll try switching the display settings to see if that resolves the issue.

Just a heads up! The MacBook Air only supports one external display when the laptop is in use. If you want to connect more, you'll need a MacBook Pro.
