How Can I Level Up My Programming Skills for a Career?

I'm currently working a 9-5 job that I'm not passionate about, and I've dabbled a bit in programming. I really enjoy it and want to pursue it as a career. I'm at a beginner level with Python, JavaScript, and HTML but don't have any formal qualifications beyond my A-Levels. I'm taking a gap year to figure out what I want to do. I have a GitHub account but I'm basically just printing 'Hello World!' right now. I'm particularly interested in medical software. I'm looking for advice on how to effectively build my skills, whether pursuing a degree in computer science/software engineering is worth it, and how to create a portfolio with some beginner project ideas. Thanks in advance for your help!

It's tough to get past initial HR screenings without formal qualifications, but you can still self-learn and build your portfolio. Try to network, and if you're really committed in six months, think about pursuing a degree.

Getting into Python or HTML+JavaScript is a solid choice! You don't necessarily need a degree in computer science to break into the field, but it can help. If you want to learn web development, check out the MDN Web Development tutorials; they're super helpful!

Start with a small project that solves a problem you're passionate about. Build it, add it to your GitHub, and keep repeating that process. That’s a surefire way to grow your portfolio and boost your confidence!

In today's job market, many folks think a degree is a must to get into programming. But honestly, the competition is fierce, and even a degree doesn't guarantee a job. However, keep pushing yourself with self-directed projects and improve constantly!
