How can I manage my son’s iPhone screen time effectively?

I'm facing a big challenge with my 13-year-old son and his iPhone. He's supposed to have around 3 hours of screen time daily, but I really think it often goes beyond that—sometimes hitting 7 or 8 hours! I've checked the browser history, but it doesn't add up with the recorded screen time, so I suspect he might have found a way to bypass the limits. He also spends a lot of time on WhatsApp, and while I've looked to see if he's sending himself YouTube links there, it still doesn't explain all the time spent. He follows some channels, but I'm doubtful it's enough to account for several hours of usage. He has an iPhone XR running the latest iOS. I really want to limit his screen time since it's far too much, whether on the phone or the PC. However, I want to address this fairly with him. Is it possible that screen time tracking could be inaccurate, or might he be getting around it somehow?

To really tackle excessive smartphone use, the most straightforward solution, if you're unsure about any tricks he might be using to bypass restrictions, is to physically secure the device when it’s not allowed. You might also think about limiting Wi-Fi access from your router to his phone during specific hours, but keep in mind that he can still use cellular data. Just an FYI, while Screen Time can sometimes show crazy stats—like an app running for over 20 hours in a single day—your situation doesn’t seem typical. It might be that he knows the Screen Time passcode or has learned some kind of hack online. But who can juggle chainsaws while reciting in Latin, right?
