How Can I Organize My Mixed Role IT Team Better Using Jira?

I'm leading an IT Operations team at a financial institution that includes database administrators, system analysts, and system admins. Recently, I've noticed that we have a lack of clarity around priorities for tasks and projects, which has led to some frustration among the team. We currently use Jira but haven't been making the most of it. After discussing with my team, we've been considering adopting methodologies like Agile, Scrum, or Kanban to improve our workflow. However, I'm unsure which one would suit our needs best and fit within our current use of Jira. Since we're a tier 2 escalation point for front-end support while also handling back-end development and network infrastructure, any insights or suggestions on how to structure our workflow would be greatly appreciated. If I can't find a clear direction, I might try out each methodology for a month to gather feedback.

I think Agile and Scrum work best for project-based work, while Kanban is ideal for managing support-related tasks. Starting with a daily standup could really help your team stay on the same page about who’s doing what and what help they might need. After a couple of weeks, you'll better understand your workflow needs and can incorporate elements like Kanban or Agile if necessary.

Honestly, just go with Kanban. It seems to fit your situation perfectly based on what you've shared. If you find you need something more later, you can always adapt your workflow and possibly incorporate agile sprints, but starting simple is key. Trust me, I’m a certified Scrum developer with over 20 years of experience, and I just use a simple Google Sheet to track what my team is working on, and it works great.

Before you dive into complex systems like Agile or Scrum, consider starting with something simpler. Scrum and Agile really shine when the entire organization is involved, but with just your team, it might not work effectively. You could set up a Kanban board without going overboard; just a quick 15-minute standup every morning can help. You can list your projects on the board and reorder them as priorities change. With a small team, a casual conversation at the standup can really keep everyone in the loop.
