How can I protect my boot files from getting messed up?

Hey everyone! I'm relatively new to this whole thing and I've been curious about how to keep my boot files secure. I know that if GRUB or the boot partition gets corrupted, I can end up completely locked out of my system. So, what are some reliable methods to back these up or safeguard them? Do most folks just take their chances and try to fix things if something goes wrong?

Also, I often leave my laptop open in shared spaces, and I'm starting to worry about the possibility of someone tampering with my boot files when I'm not around. Is this a valid concern, or am I just being overly cautious?

Locking your BIOS and using Secure Boot with custom keys is a great way to prevent others from messing with your boot files. If those are secure, it’s much harder for someone to interfere!

Secure Boot can help protect against intentional tampering, but it sounds like your concerns are more about accidental issues. You might want to look into that and see if there's a way to safeguard against both.

Using Secure Boot and regularly backing up your data is crucial. Also, don't forget to lock your screen when you're away. Full disk encryption like LUKS is a good extra layer of protection.

I keep a backup of my EFI partitions on a USB drive specifically for that purpose. It doesn’t even need to be a big drive. If something goes wrong, I can easily restore those EFI files to my system. I once dealt with a corrupt EFI partition, and having that backup saved me a ton of hassle! If you're ever locked out, using a live USB can help out too.
