How can I reclaim my Windows laptop that’s still managed by my old company’s IT?

I have a Windows laptop that was provided by my previous company, which is no longer in business. The laptop is still under the control of the IT administrator, and I'm unable to create a new user without logging into the company's work domain. I'm considering doing a fresh install of Windows using a USB drive, but I'm worried that I might run into issues with Microsoft Autopilot or a BIOS password when the device connects to the internet. What are my options here? I would really appreciate any help!

Since your device is managed by a Mobile Device Management (MDM) system, contacting IT from your old company would usually be the first step. However, since that company no longer exists, you're likely out of luck unless you can get help directly from Microsoft support. They may have processes in place to assist with devices like yours, but be prepared—it can take some time and effort. Unfortunately, without formal IT assistance, there’s no guaranteed way to bypass the MDM restrictions. Good luck getting it sorted!

Yeah, I've heard that Microsoft can sometimes help in these situations, though I haven't had to deal with it myself. Just be sure to have proof of ownership ready!

Resetting the BIOS settings could help, but I'm not sure how far you'll get without admin rights. You might still face hurdles when trying to reinstall Windows, especially if there are MDM settings that lock it down. If you can reset the BIOS, it might be worth a try, but it sounds tricky!

You might indeed need administrator access for that. It's a long shot, but if you can manage to reset it before the reinstall, it might just work!
