How Can I Remove the Apple Activation Lock from a MacBook I Bought at Auction?

Hey everyone, I'm Michael! So today I attended a governmental auction and ended up buying a 2018 MacBook Pro that had been lost and not reclaimed. I've got the auction receipt and a data erasure report from Blanco.

I'm trying to figure out how to remove the Apple activation lock. The device was wiped clean, and I want to install a new operating system on it. I managed to install macOS Ventura 13 when I bypassed the activation lock, but I'm really looking to switch this MacBook over to Linux for my computer science studies. My main notebook is heavy and consumes too much electricity for everyday use, so I'm hoping to get this one running for classes.

Any advice on how to go about getting rid of the activation lock would be greatly appreciated!

It's a bit concerning that you didn't know about the activation lock. If you have the original auction documents, I hope they help, but I've heard it can take a week or two to sort these things out if you're in the right position.

I definitely understand the activation lock is a security feature, but I was told at the auction that everything was good to go for restoring. Just hoping for a way to get it running!

Honestly, it sounds like you're dealing with a 'parts' machine since it has an activation lock. You might need to replace the logic board to get it working again.
