Hey everyone! I'm relatively new to using Apple products and I have two devices: a Mac mini and a MacBook Pro. I'm trying to figure out how to manage iCloud so that I can use each Mac as a separate computer. Specifically, I want any documents or files I have on my MacBook Pro to not automatically appear on my Mac mini when I log in with the same iCloud account. My goal is for both devices to function independently and only share files when I choose to do so. Should I keep using the same iCloud account and just change some settings, or is it better to create a separate account for one of the devices? Maybe setting up different user accounts is the way to go? I'd love any advice or recommendations since I'm still figuring all this out. Thanks!

I'd say go for two Apple IDs and activate Family Sharing. That way, you treat them as independent devices. For sharing files, use AirDrop or a shared iCloud folder, but remember that you have to manage your apps separately unless you share purchases.
Honestly, I've been using one Apple ID for all my devices, and it's worked out perfectly. I don’t bother with syncing the desktop or documents either, since I prefer keeping things separate. For file syncing across multiple computers, I rely on Dropbox—super easy to use.
You can stick with the same iCloud account! Just make sure to turn off the desktop and document syncing features. This way, your files won't automatically transfer between the Macs.
That makes sense! But if I need to share something specific later on, how would I do that?
You just have to turn off syncing for the desktop and documents folder in your iCloud settings. It gives you more control over what shows up on each Mac.
Great! So if I want something shared, I can just adjust it when needed?
To keep things completely separate, having different Apple IDs is the best approach. Just a heads-up though, sharing purchased apps and media can be trickier. You might want to use Family Sharing to make it easier.
But if I buy an app on one account, I won't have access to it on the other unless I buy it again, right?

So just to clarify, if I buy an app on one ID, I won't be able to use it on the other without repurchasing?
