Hey everyone! I'm just starting my journey with C programming and I'm really interested in contributing to Linux. I'm looking for ways to get involved and meet others while learning along the way. Even the smallest contributions matter to me. Any tips on how to get started?

Check out this page I found for some useful info on getting involved: https://www.billdietrich.me/LinuxContribution.html

Honestly, the whole "open source contribution" phrase seems overhyped. Just find something that bugs you or a feature you want to add. Then dive in and get started!

You should consider picking a specific Linux distribution or application that you're interested in. Reach out to the team working on it and start with small tasks. As your skills grow, you can take on bigger challenges!

That makes sense! Most people don’t just work on Linux broadly; they typically focus on areas they care about, like fixing issues in their own setup. I’m thinking of forking a project I really like to tweak it for my needs.

Thanks for the advice! Also, how can I connect with others at a similar skill level?

Reaching out directly might not be necessary. It might be more effective to engage in community forums where you can share fixes and let the main team notice you.

If you're willing to experiment, try installing a "testing" or "unstable" version of a distribution on a spare machine. You can report bugs as you go! Following reported bugs from others will help you learn a lot about what to fix.

Absolutely! Bug testing is a solid way to dive in. Debian’s development cycle (unstable > testing > stable) is pretty manageable for that kind of work.
