How can I stop QuickBooks Desktop from updating automatically?

I'm looking for some solid advice on how to completely block updates for older versions of QuickBooks Desktop that I still need to support. I've been digging around online, and while I found some potential solutions, nothing seems to work effectively. I don't want Intuit to have the ability to force updates or even allow users to manually install them outside of our scheduled maintenance time. I've tried using Folder Firewall Blocker to restrict internet access to certain Intuit folders, but I can still download updates manually through the software. Any reliable methods out there? Would really appreciate any help!

Unfortunately, I have to break it to you, but relying on older versions of QuickBooks can be tricky. Intuit often shuts down online integrations for outdated versions, which can really limit functionality. It’s like trying to play a game once the servers are taken down; the software becomes almost useless without those connections. As someone who works with many businesses using QuickBooks, trust me, it's better to stay updated for practical use. It could save you a lot of headache.

I get that, but I heard Intuit is pushing everyone towards the cloud anyway. Have you guys considered making the switch?

That’s tough to hear. I’ve been using an unsupported version and haven’t hit any issues yet. To be fair, I don’t need online features like payroll or bank import for my clients.

This might be a long shot, but you could consider setting up a terminal server on a separate VLAN and blocking all internet traffic there. Users can then access QuickBooks remotely without any risk of updates sneaking in. It would require some manual work for server updates, but at least you’d have better control over what’s happening.

Consider blocking specific URLs related to QuickBooks updates. I found some links that might help you set up firewall rules to prevent communication with Intuit’s servers, which could stop those auto-updates from getting through. Just ensure to check that the URLs are current since they can change.

That’s a solid point! DNS filtering could also work if you know which URLs to target.

I’ll give that a shot, thanks for the tip!
