I'm currently a Cloud Engineer with about 5-6 years of experience in IT, primarily focusing on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as Code (IaC). I've got several certifications under my belt including AZ-900, AZ-104, AZ-305, and AZ-400, and I've been working my way up to a mid-level position.
My ultimate goal is to transition into DevOps, and I know that mastering tools like Docker and Kubernetes is crucial for that. I've already started learning them in my spare time and have even built a few small projects. However, I'm running into a couple of major obstacles when applying for DevOps roles:
1. Often, I don't get invited for interviews.
2. If I do interview, the offers I receive are ridiculously low, sometimes almost half of my current salary, because they view me as a junior level due to my limited hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
I can't afford a drastic pay cut, and since my current job doesn't use these tools, I don't get the chance to gain real-world experience. Given that the job market isn't great right now, especially in my country where salaries are already on the lower side compared to most of Europe, it feels pretty discouraging.
What advice do you have for someone in my position to successfully shift into DevOps without taking a significant financial hit?

You should definitely continue building your skills in your free time! Consider applying for jobs that incorporate both your cloud and DevOps skills – companies might have an easier time justifying hiring you into a slightly higher role. Also, don’t forget to network! Personal connections can sometimes lead to better opportunities.

Make it clear in your interviews that Cloud Engineering is fundamentally tied to DevOps. Highlight experiences where you've automated infrastructure or sped up deployments.
