How Can I Upgrade an Old PC to Play Games?

I recently inherited an old PC from my dad that my ex gave him, and I'm looking to upgrade it to play games since my PS4 broke. The problem is, I'm totally clueless about PCs and have no idea how to get started. I tried to run Baldur's Gate 3 on it, but it failed miserably because the hardware is quite outdated. I'm considering just upgrading the graphics card, but I've heard there might be issues like bottlenecks if the rest of the components aren't up to par. Unfortunately, I don't have much of a budget outside of buying a new graphics card. I want to confirm if I can just upgrade the graphics card alone, and also how to check if my current parts are compatible before making any purchases. Any guidance on how to find out what parts are in my PC would be super helpful!

Just a thought, but you might want to consider looking up some YouTube videos about upgrading old PCs. They often provide step-by-step guides and could help you visualize what you’ll need to check and replace. It could save you a lot of time and confusion!

Great idea! I’ll look for some tutorials. Thanks!

You should definitely check out a program called Speccy. It’s free to download and will show you all the specs of your PC, including the CPU, RAM, and motherboard details. Once you know what you have, you can make more informed decisions about what parts to upgrade! Let me know if you need help with anything specific after that.

Thanks! I just downloaded Speccy! What should I look for exactly?

Honestly, I recommend starting with Speccy to get the specs first. But keep in mind, if your CPU is on the older side, like that AMD Ryzen 3 2300X, it might bottleneck newer graphics cards. You could still upgrade the GPU, but if you want the best performance, you might need to think about getting a new CPU and motherboard down the road. Just be careful with compatibility!

That makes sense. I'll check my specs first and see what I can find out!

Definitely don't just jump into buying a graphics card without knowing your specs. You could hit a compatibility wall real quick! Also, your RAM is a bit low for modern games; ideally, you’d want at least 16GB, but see what you can do now with just the GPU. If you find that your parts are still pretty old, maybe you should consider saving a bit longer to do a more complete upgrade. Good luck!
