How Can I Use the USB4 Thunderbolt 10 Gbps Type-C Header on My New PC?

Hey everyone! I'm putting together a build with the Asus Prime Z890-P motherboard, which features an onboard header for a USB4 Thunderbolt 10 Gbps Type-C port. I'm trying to find a PC case that supports this header by including a port and cable, but I'm a bit lost on how to identify if the USB ports in the cases are actually USB4 Thunderbolt.

Can anyone help me figure out what to look for?

Just to clarify, if you’re looking to use Thunderbolt, the cards usually fit into a PCIe slot at the back, similar to your GPU. You won't find these on the front ports of most cases.

Got it! I saw a case that has USB4 up front that seems to work with that header. It’s pretty high-end, though—might be more than I intended to spend.

It sounds like there might be some confusion with the types. The Asus motherboard does have a Thunderbolt port at the back that supports USB4/TB4 speeds (up to 40 Gbps). However, the header for your Type-C is set for 10 Gbps USB 3.2, which is different. Many cases come with connectors for that header, so you should have options!

You definitely want to check the specs of the case you’re considering. Make sure it specifically lists USB4, since many just come with USB 3.2 ports instead. It can be confusing because USB 3.2 is much more common.

Thanks for the tip! I keep running across USB 3.2 listings, which makes it confusing. Have you seen any cases that actually offer USB4? I couldn't find that as a filter on NewEgg, so I'm stuck.
