Hey everyone! I need some advice for a friend of mine. He's been living with me for a bit after getting out of a really controlling situation with his parents. Since he's 18 and deserves his privacy, I just found out that he doesn't have his own Apple ID. Instead, all of their family devices are under one account, which has resulted in his parents being able to see all his texts and calls—a huge violation of his privacy. I want to help him disconnect his phone from that Apple ID and create a new one for himself. Does anyone have tips on how to do this without needing his parents' info? Thanks!

If your friend bought the device, he can erase it using a computer and then show Apple the original purchase receipt to have them remove the Apple ID from the device. If he didn’t buy it, technically, it still belongs to his parents and they have the right to access it.
To disconnect from the family Apple ID, you can go to Settings, tap your name at the top, and then sign out. After that, your friend can create a new Apple ID. Make sure he keeps all the data he wants on the phone before signing out!
That sounds pretty easy! Thanks for the clear steps.

I tried that, but it asked for the password and we don’t have it. Is there another way to do it?
