Why Did My Printer’s USB Port Suddenly Fail?

Hey everyone! I have a Brother MFC-J6530DW printer that has been reliable for years. It was mainly connected to my PC, and I used the USB connection occasionally for my laptop. Out of nowhere, I started getting an error message: "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" when I tried to connect it. I've gone through tons of troubleshooting steps, like swapping out USB cables and trying different PCs, but I keep hitting the same error. I really haven't used the USB port much, and it seemed fine, so I'm puzzled. What could have caused this failure? Any advice would be super helpful, especially since my expertise is more in software than hardware!

Before giving up, try a couple more tricks: unplug the printer, hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any static, and see if it has a factory reset option in the menu.

Have you tried another USB port on your laptop? Sometimes, it's just an issue with the port itself.

Yes, I did, and the same error popped up.

It’s strange when devices fail like that without any apparent cause. Have you tried reinstalling the printer after uninstalling it? If it works fine with Wi-Fi or Ethernet, why not stick with that?

I wasn’t looking for a fix but rather understanding what led to the issue. I’ve done all sorts of tests as I detailed, but the USB port still fails.
