I'm trying to figure out how to determine if a graphics card is compatible with my motherboard. Are all PCI slots the same, or are there differences I should be aware of?

Most of the time, a graphics card will fit into your motherboard, but the real question is whether it will perform as expected. This depends on the PCIe lanes and generation. For example, newer GPUs like the RTX 5060 or 5070 might not perform as well if they're used on older PCIe 3 or 4 motherboards. Also, remember to check if your GPU will physically fit in your case and if your power supply can support it.

I have an MSI X470 that uses PCIe 3. I'm looking at upgrading to a 5070 or a 9070 XT. How much of a bottleneck should I expect with that setup?
