How do I set up two user accounts on a Windows laptop for shared use?

I'm looking for some advice on managing shared access to my laptop. My husband has started using it for gaming, which is great because it can handle most new titles, but I'm a bit concerned about privacy. While I don't mind him using my laptop, I'd prefer that he doesn't see all my personal conversations and files, especially since my laptop is synced with my phone. I'm aware that I can create another user account on Windows, but I'm not sure how it all works.

Additionally, I frequently reinstall my operating system. If I do a factory reset, will it wipe both user accounts and any programs installed? Also, is there a way to partition the hard drive to track how much space each user is using? Lastly, if both accounts will be using the same programs, can it be set to avoid duplicate installations? My husband and I have different tech skills, so I'd like to ensure that we don't mess up anything in the process.

Just make another account on the laptop! Your documents will be secured in your own area, so no worries about him seeing those. No need to bother with partitioning; that can complicate things unnecessarily.

Yeah, creating two accounts with different passwords is the way to go. Just so you know, a factory reset will wipe everything on both accounts, so you'll lose any installed programs. As for the hard drive, it’s tricky – there’s no easy way to partition it for tracking space usage by each user. Generally, installed programs on one account can be accessed by another, but each user usually has their own data stored separately.

It's pretty simple! Just create a separate user account for your husband. Keep your personal files in the Documents folder instead of the common files area. This way, he won’t be able to snoop around your stuff. You might also want to consider using cloud storage for anything sensitive, as that will keep it out of reach on the laptop itself.
