How Do You Set Up Reliable 4AM Emergency Alerts?

I'm a new sysadmin and I need some guidance on how to get emergency alerts at 4AM. Currently, I rely on email notifications to my Pixel 7 Pro, but I'm having issues with emails not pushing through reliably, even after troubleshooting. I've turned off adaptive battery, kept my phone updated, ensured unrestricted data usage, and kept the app running, yet notifications still get missed. I want to know how others handle emergency notifications at night. Do you use a specific device or app that works well for you? Are there any hardware or alternative setups that keep you reliably informed? I typically use Zabbix for alerts related to critical issues. My goal is to find a more dependable solution that could also work if I'm using different devices like Apple. Cheers!

I hear you! Push notifications can be tricky. Have you thought about using something like PagerDuty? It’s designed specifically for after-hours notifications and will escalate alerts if you don’t respond quickly.

Yeah, PagerDuty is definitely worth the investment—it really helps ensure you don’t miss anything urgent.

Back when I was on-call, using pagers was the go-to method. They separated important alerts from the usual phone noise. While they’ve gone out of style, they were designed explicitly for emergencies. You might want to consider setting up something similar using current tech!

Right! I kind of miss pagers—just simple and effective for getting the point across.

Honestly, email isn't the best for emergencies. You should consider getting alerts via phone calls instead. In my past job, we used OpsGenie, which has good escalation practices to make sure someone is on top of any critical issues.

OpsGenie works great! You can customize which alerts get pushed to your phone, and it helps avoid missed notifications.

For me, putting my phone on the charger and ensuring the alerts bypass 'Do Not Disturb' works best. If it’s a true emergency, you should probably get a call instead of relying on a notification that could be delayed.

Exactly! If it’s that critical, a call will definitely get your attention much faster!
