I'm upgrading from an i5-4690K, GTX 1650 4GB, 32GB of DDR3, and a Z97-A motherboard. The new system will use an i7-12700KF, RX 9060 XT 16GB, a Z790 motherboard, and 32GB of Patriot Viper Xtreme 5 DDR5 memory. I'll be reusing the SSD and Noctua heatsink from my old PC, so those parts are already available. The i7 was a free Christmas gift, and the motherboard was purchased during a sale for around $100–$110 below its usual price. This PC will mainly be used for order-flow trading and workstation tasks, with some light gaming on the side, so having plenty of CPU cores matters more to me than building purely for gaming. What did I choose well, what could be improved, and are there any setup or compatibility tips I should know before the parts arrive?

The component choices aren’t perfectly optimized for price, but the overall system should work well. Before assembling it, update the motherboard BIOS if needed, enable the memory’s XMP profile, and verify that the cooler mounting hardware supports the LGA1700 socket. Also check the power supply’s available PCIe cables and make sure the case has good airflow, especially if you’ll be running the CPU and GPU under sustained workloads.
The biggest criticism is that the platform is already a few generations old, so it doesn’t offer as much future upgrade flexibility as AM5. However, because the processor and cooler were already owned and the motherboard was heavily discounted, replacing everything just to chase better value may not be worthwhile. I’d build it, test temperatures and stability, and only consider changing parts if performance or thermals are actually disappointing.
This will still be a huge improvement over your current system, and there aren’t any serious problems with the parts you’ve chosen. The main issue is value: since you’re already buying DDR5, an AMD AM5 platform would generally give you a better upgrade path than 12th-generation Intel. The NH-D15 is also a solid cooler, but a Thermalright Peerless Assassin or similar model usually offers comparable performance for much less. Reusing the SATA SSD makes sense if you already own it, though a modern NVMe drive would be a worthwhile future upgrade for faster storage performance.
If this were strictly a gaming build, I’d try to save money on the RAM, motherboard, cooler, and other premium-brand parts, then put the savings toward a faster graphics card. A cheaper DDR4 setup could also free up enough budget for a higher GPU tier. That said, the 12700KF was free in your case, and your workstation and trading workload gives the extra cores a more reasonable justification than a typical gaming-only build.
Exactly—I received the CPU as a gift, so keeping it made more sense than selling it and rebuilding around another processor. The extra cores are useful for my workstation tasks.

The SSD and cooler are both from my old system, so I’m glad I can reuse them instead of buying replacements right now.
