How Hard Is It to Swap a CPU on My Motherboard?

I'm looking to upgrade my setup because we've been prompted to switch to Windows 11, but my current AMD Ryzen 5 2400G isn't on the compatibility list. I want to know how straightforward it would be to replace my CPU with a Ryzen 5 3400G on my PRIME B350-PLUS motherboard. I've done some research, and it seems like a simple drop-in replacement, but I've never done this before. Is there anything I need to keep in mind during the swap? Will I need to update the BIOS first? Any tips or better alternatives at a similar price point would also be appreciated!

You should definitely update your BIOS to the latest version first, but after that, it's pretty straightforward. Just swap it out, and you should be good to go!

Yes, updating the BIOS is key for compatibility. Apart from that, it’s just a matter of removing the old CPU and putting in the new one. Make sure to have some thermal paste ready for the cooler!

Also, when you're removing the cooler, twist it gently back and forth so you don't accidentally pull the CPU out with it. It can be tricky, but just take your time.

Honestly, I'd reconsider this upgrade. The 3400G isn't a substantial upgrade from the 2400G. If budget allows, maybe look at the Ryzen 5 5600G or even the 3600 for better performance in the long run.

I agree! It's worth trying Win11 on the 2400G before spending money. If you do want to upgrade, save for something more powerful.

You might find the Ryzen 5 5500 a better option! It’ll provide solid performance without needing to upgrade anytime soon, and it's great for gaming too.

Remember to reset your BIOS settings to default after updating, and it can help to warm up the CPU a bit before removal. Just get some fresh thermal paste for the new CPU installation, and you’ll be set! Good luck!
