I'm looking to buy a new PC case but I'm confused about how many HDD and SSD slots I should expect. In my search, I've mostly found cases with around 2 HDD slots and 3 SSD slots, but I'd love to know what the standard is these days, especially since it seems like M.2 SSDs are becoming more common.

My case has 2 3.5 HDD slots and 1 SSD slot, but I’ve got two SSDs in use, so one just hangs out without being used.
I’ve got between 6-8 slots for 3.5" HDDs or SSDs, plus a couple of extra mounts for SSDs in my Be Quiet Dark Base Pro 900 Rev.2.
It's pretty common to see fewer slots now. Many builders opt for M.2 drives, meaning you might find only a couple of hard drive slots if any. If you need more slots, just check out cases that can hold extra cages!
A lot of new builds nowadays are leaning towards M.2 SSDs, so additional slots might not be necessary unless you're keeping older drives. Generally, most cases come with two or three HDD SSD slots. For instance, my Core P3 has two internal and two external slots, while my old case, the Phanteks Enthoo Pro, supported a bunch of extra drive trays upfront.
Honestly, I have zero slots because everything's on my motherboard! But most setups nowadays typically have 2 HDD and 1 SSD slot. Even if I get one HDD for backups, I'd just let it sit there without worrying about it losing data like an SSD would.
