I keep hearing that dual-channel memory can make a major difference, but I'm wondering how noticeable it really is in everyday gaming. Is it worth buying a second RAM stick just to gain smoother performance or potentially around 20% more FPS? I've spent years using Intel UHD Graphics on an older i7-10510U laptop, where I'm happy to get stable 1% lows in Minecraft and around 30 FPS in Skyrim. For a new desktop using DDR5, I could only find one reasonably priced RAM stick. Would running a single stick noticeably hurt performance, or is dual-channel mainly important for integrated graphics and certain older platforms?

If your current games already run acceptably, you don’t necessarily need to rush out and buy another stick. For a new desktop, though, two matching DDR5 modules are normally the better setup, particularly if you care about consistent frame times or are using integrated graphics. Benchmarks for your specific CPU and game will give the most accurate estimate.
DDR5 reduces the downside somewhat because each stick has two independent 32-bit subchannels instead of one 64-bit channel. That doesn’t make dual-channel irrelevant, though—you can still gain performance from using two sticks. The difference is generally more noticeable with integrated graphics, since they use system RAM as video memory.
It depends on the rest of the system, but dual-channel can make a noticeable difference on DDR4 systems, especially with non-X3D Ryzen processors. You may see better average FPS and improved 1% lows. The effect is usually smaller on X3D chips, but it can still exist.

To clarify, this is for a new desktop tower. I could only get one DDR5 stick at a price that seemed reasonable, so I’m mainly trying to figure out whether adding a second one later would make a meaningful difference.
