How Much Performance Did I Lose by Running DDR5-6000 at 4800?

I built my PC a few months ago with 32GB of DDR5-6000, but I recently noticed in the BIOS that it had been running at the default 4800 MT/s because I never enabled EXPO or XMP. The system was stable, games ran well, and I never noticed any obvious problems. After enabling EXPO, the difference in a couple of quick game tests seemed small, although the frame-time lows may be a little better. My system uses a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and a GeForce RTX 4070 Super, and I mostly play at 1440p. How much performance was I realistically leaving on the table, and is faster memory being overemphasized? Besides checking that the PC remains stable, are there any other settings or tests I should verify after enabling EXPO?

You probably gave up a few percent rather than a huge amount. With a 7800X3D, the large cache reduces how much memory speed affects gaming, and at 1440p the 4070 Super often becomes the limiting factor. You’re more likely to notice an improvement in CPU-limited games, high-refresh 1080p play, or frame-time consistency than in average FPS at 1440p.

After enabling EXPO, run a proper memory test rather than relying only on being able to boot. Check that Windows reports the expected speed, confirm the memory voltage and timings look reasonable, and test with something like MemTest86, TestMem5, OCCT, or several hours of your usual games. Also verify that BIOS updates haven’t reset EXPO later, since firmware changes can restore default memory settings.

The impact depends heavily on whether you’re CPU- or GPU-limited. Faster RAM can help more at lower resolutions and very high refresh rates, while 1440p gaming usually hides much of the difference behind GPU load. It can still improve minimums in some games, but the small change you observed is completely normal.

A rough estimate for this CPU would be around 3–5% in games that benefit from faster memory, though the result varies by title. The jump from DDR5-4800 to DDR5-6000 is still worthwhile, especially since DDR5-6000 is a common performance target for Ryzen 7000, but it isn’t something worth feeling guilty about for months.
