How Often Should I Replace Thermal Paste for My PC?

Hey everyone! Happy New Year! I recently got a budget PC with an Intel i5 and an MSI motherboard, but no GPU. The technician who built it told me I need to replace the thermal paste every 3-6 months. I've heard this same advice from multiple shops, but when I did some research on Google and even asked ChatGPT, I found that good thermal paste should last at least 2 years and only needs replacing if the temperatures get too high. I live in Metro Manila, where it's pretty warm, and my PC isn't in an AC room. Right now, I mostly play League of Legends for about 2 hours a night, and use it for light tasks like watching YouTube or doing some Office work. So, should I actually be replacing the thermal paste every 3-6 months, or can I wait until the 2-year mark? Also, any recommendations for good thermal paste that provides long-lasting cooling? Thanks for any help!

Honestly, those shops might just want to sell you more paste. Quality thermal paste can last for multiple years without needing a change. I have a PC running fine after 5 years with the same paste, so don’t stress too much about it unless your temps rise dramatically.

Thanks for the insight! Any brands known for longevity?

I’ve had my PC for over three years and only recently changed the paste when swapping cases, no temp issues beforehand! Just keep an eye on your CPU temps, and replace when you notice a significant rise. Good thermal paste can last several years, so don’t let them upsell you too much.

That’s a relief! What thermal paste do you usually use? Any favorites?

Every 3 months seems excessive. With good paste, you’re looking at 5 years or more before a change is really needed. Just monitor your temperatures, and avoid lower-quality stuff that can degrade faster.

Totally agree! I’ll stick with something reputable. Suggestions?

You really only need to replace the thermal paste when you notice your temps starting to increase significantly. If you're having to change it every 3 months, that's a sign the paste isn't very good quality.

Got it! Any specific thermal paste brands you recommend?
