How Should I Deal with a Job Requiring MDM Software on My Personal Phone?

Hey everyone! I'm not a systems admin, but I could really use your advice. I just finished a final interview for a non-tech job, and during the discussion, I was told that we must use Teams and Outlook on our phones since we'll be traveling a lot. The kicker is, the company doesn't provide phones. They want to install MDM (Mobile Device Management) software on our personal devices to prevent things like screenshots or copying text, which makes me really hesitant about using my personal phone for this role. I've already reached out to HR for clarification regarding data privacy, particularly since I also use Outlook for personal emails and have a side freelance business. They explained that anyone using company apps must have their MDM, called Intune Company Portal, installed. However, they didn't clarify whether personal data would be protected. I'm considering either getting a cheap Android or maybe adding a tablet to my phone plan specifically for work. What do you all think? Should I get a new phone or a tablet, or am I just overthinking this whole MDM issue?

If they want you to install MDM on your personal phone, then they need to provide you with a company phone. It’s plain and simple - don’t let them take control of your private device without compensation. I would recommend walking away if they push it.

Right? I’d be skeptical of a company that treats their employees like that.

Honestly, using personal devices for work can get tricky, especially with MDM in play. I personally wouldn’t want to have MDM installed on my phone since that usually gives the company a lot of control. If it’s just for Outlook and Teams, getting a cheap second phone could keep things separate and maintain your privacy. It's usually easier to enforce a work/life balance that way too. Just my two cents!

I totally get that! Having a dedicated work phone can also help you disconnect once your work hours are done.

You shouldn’t have to install that software on your personal device, especially since they aren't providing a phone. It sounds like they might be trying to micromanage a bit too much. If they require it, I’d either push back and ask for a company phone or seriously reconsider the job if they're so stringent about it.

Yeah, no job is worth compromising your personal data. They should invest in their employees' tools.

I’m a big believer in having two phones. It just helps with separating work and personal life. If you can find a decent older model to use for work, do that! Whatever you decide, don’t compromise your privacy.

Exactly! Plus, it’s good that you’re thinking ahead about your side business's security.
