Hey everyone! I'm relocating to Montreal soon and I've decided to bring my desktop PC with me instead of selling it. I have an 8-hour flight and I'm particularly concerned about how to prevent any damage during travel. I have three checked bags and two carry-ons available, so I'm not overly worried about space, but I'd like to avoid any mishaps with my gear.
Here are a few questions I have:
• Is it safe to put my PC in a checked suitcase?
• What parts should I remove before flying?
• What's the best packing method to ensure everything stays safe?
I was considering taking out the GPU and possibly the CPU cooler, placing those in anti-static bags in my carry-on, and then padding my PC case with clothes or foam in a suitcase. Does this sound like a good plan or too risky? I'm also open to the idea of shipping it if that's better. Any advice from those who've traveled with a PC would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend putting your PC in a checked suitcase. They're often mishandled and there's a risk of your bag being lost or delayed. I've traveled with my PC before, and I always keep it in my carry-on. If it won’t fit, definitely remove the GPU and bring it with you. If you have a tower cooler, it might be wise to remove that as well.
Your setup sounds nice! If you want the safest option, go with the carry-on route. It could be a hassle, but it's the best way to avoid getting anything damaged. And if you do decide to check it, make sure you’ve detached all the easily damaged parts and wrapped them well.
I've brought my PC along in a suitcase before. If you're confident, it should be okay, but definitely remove the graphics card and the CPU cooler if it’s tall. Just ensure it fits snugly in the suitcase—make sure there's no chance for any shifting around during the flight. Even with good packing, there's always some risk, so be prepared for that.
From what I've read, removing the GPU and CPU cooler is key. If you still have the original box for your components, that's what you should use. For the rest of the PC, I'd suggest using self-expanding foam for extra cushion and really making sure the glass panel is well protected. Nothing heavy should be packed with it to avoid pressure damage.
I've traveled with a PC a few times, and what works best is to disassemble it to individual parts. Wrap each component in clothes or bubble wrap and pack everything tightly to avoid movement. Keep the PSU separate and avoid heavy items in the same luggage to minimize the chance of damage.
Packing components separately is the way to go. Just make absolutely sure nothing can wiggle around in the suitcase!

Carrying a whole curved glass panel seems risky! I'd just focus on transporting the internals without the case if possible.
