How to Set Up Partitions for Dual Booting with Windows?

Hey everyone! I recently tried to install Linux Mint but got intimidated when I reached the partitioning step, so I decided to pause the installation. I'm looking to create a dual-boot setup that allows me to keep Windows while I gradually move over to Linux. I'm not very tech-savvy, and I've read some things about partitioning, but my concerns haven't been addressed clearly. I'd like to know how I should divide the partitions if I plan on keeping Windows for now and transitioning slowly to Linux. Also, are there additional steps in the installation process I should keep in mind? Thanks for your help!

Once you start, make sure to follow the prompts carefully, and it might help to watch a quick tutorial on dual-boot installations if you're feeling uncertain. Having a plan on what to migrate first can also make the transition easier!

First off, you need to make sure you have enough space on your hard drive. Remember to leave room for your Windows installation and its files. While Linux Mint needs at least 20 GB, I’d recommend aiming for around 100 GB to be safe. Cutting it down to 40 GB might work, but it could get tight. It's also worth noting that while you can change partition sizes later, it’s best to get it right during the initial install. And don't forget to back up your important data and have a Windows install USB ready, just in case!

Most Linux distros, including Kubuntu and Mint, will let you set up a dual boot easily during the installation. When you start the installer, you'll have the option to install alongside Windows, which makes the process straightforward. You can choose how much disk space to allocate for Windows and for Linux based on your needs.

Just click on 'Install alongside...' in the disk selection screen, and you’ll be able to adjust the size of the Linux partition with a slider or by typing in the amount you want.
