How to Tackle a False VPN Accusation at Work?

I'm in a bit of a bind here. My workplace's IT admin claims I've been using a VPN consistently, even though I've never set one up on any of my devices. I understand there are tools for online security, but I don't use them and it's been years since I subscribed to a VPN service. I've worked here for six years without any issues related to BYOD, but suddenly, they're breathing down my neck, citing evidence of VPN usage from just a few days ago. I've already checked my computer and I'm baffled since I predominantly use Google Workspace and watch background YouTube. I worry about confronting them or asking for evidence in a way that could jeopardize my job. Any thoughts on how to handle this situation effectively?

This sounds more like a communication mishap rather than a tech issue. Have you tried talking to your IT department or your boss to clarify the misunderstanding? It's important to get to the bottom of this without getting defensive. Sharing your side calmly could really help!

You can't really prove that you didn't use a VPN, so it might be better to turn the focus around. Ask them to show you the proof of VPN usage instead. That way, you’re not stuck in the defensive position of having to prove a negative.

But wouldn't it be straightforward to just check if VPN software is on your device or if it's been uninstalled recently?
