How to Transfer Windows OS from HDD to SSD Without Losing Other Files?

I'm helping a friend transfer his Windows OS to a new SSD for improved boot times, as he's been frustrated with the slow speed of his current hard drive. The issue is that his HDD has over a terabyte of data, while the SSD only has 500GB. He just wants to move the OS and maybe a couple of Steam games later since he doesn't want to lose any important files like video footage. However, most tutorials suggest transferring the entire drive, which he doesn't want to do. Is there a way to identify and transfer only the essential files needed for Windows 11 without deleting everything else? I've got Macrium Reflect free version to use, but I'm not quite sure how to get started with it. Any tips?

Before starting the migration, make sure your friend backs up all the important files he wants to keep onto another drive or two. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially with all that video footage.

Transferring the OS is likely a recipe for disaster. I would suggest reinstalling Windows on the SSD, then you can clean up the old HDD afterwards.

I wouldn't recommend trying to move the whole OS. There's a good chance it could end up failing. Grab a couple of USB drives, back up the important data, and then use a Windows installer USB to set up the system on the new SSD. Once you have Windows running on the SSD, you can transfer files from the HDD as needed.

This method seems much safer! Plus, you can always format the old HDD once you're done to free up space.

Honestly, it might be simpler to just do a fresh installation of Windows on the SSD and keep the HDD as extra storage. After installing Windows, you can always copy over any files you need from the old drive whenever necessary.

That sounds safer, but would I need to buy Windows again for the new SSD?

Exactly, a fresh start is usually cleaner and avoids all the hiccups that can come with a transfer.
