Hey everyone! I'm thinking about repurposing an old Dell Optiplex 7050 into a media server. Inspired by a coworker who set one up for streaming movies and shows, I want to create something mainly for music streaming to my phone. Down the line, I might add video streaming too. I'm somewhat familiar with networking, so I'd prefer running the server headless and accessing it remotely via terminal instead of using a GUI. I also have a collection of music on my computer that I plan to transfer over. My only experience with Linux is a bit of tinkering on my Steam Deck, and I'm open to making a one-time investment if there's reasonable software needed. Any suggestions or tips for setting this up?

Both Jellyfin and Plex can work great for what you’re aiming to do! If you want easy remote access, Plex is the way to go, but just keep in mind there's a cost involved. Jellyfin can also be accessed remotely for free, so it’s a solid option too!
For your media server, I recommend using Jellyfin. It’s user-friendly and the installation instructions can be found [here](https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/installation/linux/). This should cover all you need to get started!
You might want to consider using TrueNAS SCALE for your operating system. It’s designed specifically for NAS and allows for future scaling. For media server software, both Plex and Jellyfin are popular. Plex is free for basic features but has a subscription option, while Jellyfin is completely free!

Yeah, Jellyfin is awesome for no-cost streaming, and it's getting better all the time! Definitely worth checking out.
