How well does the Intel Arc B580 work on Linux, and which distro is best for gaming?

I'm considering replacing Windows 10 with Linux on my PC and would like some advice before making the switch. My system has an Intel Arc B580 graphics card and a Ryzen 5 5500 processor. How well-supported is the B580 on Linux, and are there any driver or compatibility issues I should expect? I'll mainly use the computer for everyday tasks and gaming, so should I choose a gaming-focused distribution or a general-purpose one? Finally, how difficult is Linux to learn from scratch, especially for someone coming from Windows?

Intel hardware is well supported, though it’s still sensible to use a distribution with reasonably current kernel and graphics packages for a newer Arc card. Fedora, Linux Mint, and CachyOS are all possible choices, but there usually isn’t a single distribution that can do something completely unavailable elsewhere. If you know someone who uses Linux, choosing the same distribution can make getting help easier.

Unfortunately, none of my friends use Linux, so I’ll have to learn as I go. I’m going to research the distribution choices a bit more before deciding.

Before installing permanently, create a bootable USB and try the distribution in live mode. You can check whether the desktop, networking, display output, and other hardware work correctly, and even run some basic CPU and GPU benchmarks to see whether performance looks normal.

The Arc B580 can be close to plug-and-play on a modern Ubuntu installation. One beginner using it mainly needed to install the system and apply the normal updates, with no complicated driver process afterward.
