I Had My Cookies and Session Tokens Stolen: How Can I Resolve Fraudulent Charges?

I'm in a bit of a mess right now and could use some advice from people who've dealt with similar situations. I believe my active session tokens and cookies were stolen—possibly from a sketchy driver updater or a Chrome extension. This led to unauthorized purchases on Humble Bundle totaling around $500 via my PayPal account. I quickly secured my PC and changed all my passwords, but PayPal has denied my fraud appeal, stating that it wasn't a conventional hack. They've confirmed the payment to Humble Bundle, and now my PayPal account is overdrawn by that amount. I've reached out to Humble Bundle, but it's been over a week without a response. I'm really worried and unsure of what my next step should be. Is there anyone out there who can offer guidance or has had a similar experience?

Going forward, consider using a password manager for your accounts. They can help you keep your passwords safe and enable two-factor authentication for added security—just be cautious about how you access them yourself. Also, avoid staying logged into websites and don’t save credit card details in your browser. Protecting your information is key now more than ever.

Good to know! I’ll look into password managers. Just to clarify, if someone gets into my manager, can they access all my passwords?

Yes, it’s crucial to have a strong password for your password manager itself. Consider using biometrics if your manager supports it, as that adds extra security.

It sounds like you might need more legal guidance rather than just tech support. Have you thought about reaching out to a legal expert for advice? They can definitely help you navigate how to deal with those fraudulent charges more effectively.

I appreciate the suggestion! I might need to explore legal options since PayPal isn’t being helpful regarding the fraud. Do you have any tips on how I should approach this?

Consider reaching out to your local consumer protection agency too; they may have resources or guidance about how to handle crowdsourced fraud cases.

Before anything else, I’d recommend doing a complete reinstall of your operating system. It’s a bit extreme, but you'll be safer in the long run. Just make sure to be extra careful about what you install in the future—especially programs like driver updaters that can sometimes bring malware with them.

Yeah, I think I let my guard down with that driver updater. It won't happen again. I just need to ensure everything is secure moving forward.

It sounds like you've done a good job securing your accounts, but you might want to follow up with PayPal again. They often rely on automated systems that may not fully understand your situation. If possible, try to get a human on the line for better support. Also, check out online communities like legal advice forums or consumer advocacy sites for additional help with PayPal.

CuriousCat123 -

That’s a good idea! I’ll definitely try to escalate my case and seek help from those communities. Thanks for the encouragement!

I had similar issues with PayPal and pushing for a human response can really make a difference. Keep at it!
