I'm looking into backing up Azure VMs with around 100 TB of data. I want to know if using a private endpoint for this backup would end up being cheaper than doing the backup over the internet. What are the cost implications of both options?

In my experience, I’d usually lean toward using the internet unless there are specific reasons to go with PEP. The egress charges for a private endpoint can add up, especially at that scale with 100 TB. Just make sure your internet can support the load!
That's an interesting question! Generally, using a private endpoint (PEP) can add costs that could offset any savings you think you might have. Even if the data transfer happens within the data center, you'll still incur charges for ingress with PEP, especially if you're using ExpressRoute for the backup. So, in some cases, backing up over the internet might actually be the more economical option if your internet can handle it.
It really depends on where your data is coming from. If your VMs are also in Azure, going with a private endpoint might work, but you need to consider the whole ingress path. If they're on-prem or in another cloud, that could change things. Always check the specific costs for data transfer in your scenario!
