I’m 17 and Eager to Learn About Hardware – Where Should I Begin?

Hi everyone! I'm 17 years old and I really want to dive into the world of hardware, but I feel like I'm starting from behind. Up until last year, I didn't have much access to tech, and I've mainly been focused on learning software and programming languages like C and Python. Currently, I'm working through CS50 and keep hearing how understanding hardware is crucial, especially when dealing with low-level coding. I dream of getting into building PCs as a hobby, but money is tight and all I have at the moment is my hand-me-down MacBook. Could anyone recommend some affordable resources, videos, books, or simulators that could help me learn how computers work from a hardware perspective? Thanks for any advice!

A great starting point is the Mike Meyers CompTIA A+ certification exam guide. It covers everything you need to know about hardware and computing. Even older editions are still valuable. I used it to fill in gaps before I started working at an IT firm, and it was super helpful!

Why not start with a Raspberry Pi? A basic kit is pretty affordable, and it comes with easy assembly. It’s a fun way to get your hands on hardware and code at the same time. Plus, you can take on various projects that interest you!

You could try some Raspberry Pi projects! You can usually find a second-hand model for a good price, which is great for hands-on learning and experimentation.

If you're in the U.S., check out the WIOA program. It's a grant that funds educational opportunities for motivated individuals like yourself. If you happen to be in Texas, I can help get you started!

I'm from Washington but thank you for the info! I just looked it up and found out WIOA is available here as well.
