Intel’s 12th or 13th Gen vs AMD 9000 Series: Which Should I Choose?

Hey everyone! Hope you're all doing great! I'm currently putting together a new gaming PC and I'm stuck in a bit of a pickle. I have the opportunity to get either an i7-12700 or i7-13700 (both non-K) for pretty much nothing, but I've heard some scary stories about Intel chips blowing up due to voltage issues. This got me wondering if I should just go for the Intel CPUs or save up for an AMD setup instead. Given that I'm in Argentina and prices are all over the place, I'm keen to know if Intel is a safe bet right now or if I should hold off for AMD. Appreciate any advice! 😀

Sounds like your friend might be confusing the generations. The 14th gen had the issues, but the 12th and 13th should be good for you, so definitely grab that 13700 while you can!

I’m still worried about using LGA1700 chips. If something goes wrong and the CPU fries, that could cost me a lot!

The 13th gen is definitely an upgrade over the 12th. If you're worried, maybe grab an extra one just for peace of mind. I’ve been using my 13700kf without a hitch for over a year now, and I think people are making too big of a deal about the issues.

If you can get an Intel CPU for free, I'd say just go for it! There were voltage issues with the 13th and 14th gen chips, but most of those problems have been sorted out with BIOS updates. As long as the chip is relatively new and you update the BIOS when you build the system, you should be just fine!

Just to add, those CPUs are typically run all day, and even if they’re idling a lot, the ones from last year that your friend has should be okay as long as they're in good shape.

Honestly, the 12th gen is a sweet spot right now. The i7-12700 is a solid chip. However, the 13th gen does offer more performance but might have had its share of problems when overvolted. If you get a good deal, the 13700 is still worth it!
