My husband's iPhone 13 has started turning off and on by itself, and just today we noticed the battery has swollen, causing the screen to bulge. He hasn't backed up his photos on iCloud, and he's regretting it. We want to know how long it might take to back up about 12,000 photos if the phone only works when plugged in. Also, is there a risk of the phone exploding if we try to back it up? Finally, is it possible for Apple to just replace the battery without wiping the phone?

It's risky to keep that phone plugged in. The swollen battery is a hazard, and it might leak or even cause a fire. Best to power it down and keep it away from sharp objects. Apple can replace the battery without wiping, but you have to sign a form acknowledging data loss is a possibility.
You really don’t want to attempt backing it up while it’s plugged in – it could explode. Just remove the phone from any power source and store it safely until you can get it into Apple for service.
You should really stop using that phone immediately. Plugging it in could be dangerous, and back up time will be a while, especially with 12k photos. Apple might replace the battery, but there’s always a chance they will need to wipe your phone during the process.
Honestly, if the battery is swollen, Apple is not likely to touch it. They have strict safety protocols due to the risk of puncturing the battery. If you keep trying to plug it in, it could definitely be dangerous. If you smell anything odd, immediately put it in a metal container and take it outside.
