Is $400 a Fair Price for Building a High-End PC?

I'm looking to have a PC built with a 5090 GPU, and I initially thought the labor cost would be between $200 and $300 if I bought the parts myself. However, my local shop quoted me $400 for the build. Is this the current average, or does it seem high? I know there's some expertise involved, especially with things like installing Windows, but this feels pricey. I've seen mixed opinions on this, and I'm considering whether to wait until I can afford to have it built or just attempt it myself. Any thoughts?

$400 sounds a bit high to me unless they offer some sort of warranty or additional services. Typical rates I've seen hover around $200-$250 for a standard build, but high-end setups might justify the extra costs depending on where you go.

That's interesting. Some shops charge differently based on the complexity of the build. Always best to check what’s included!

If you're located in Houston, I’d be willing to build it for $150 this weekend. I could help you get it set up without breaking the bank!

If you're investing in a high-end system like a 5090, an additional $100 for labor doesn't seem too bad, depending on the shop's location and services provided. $400 might actually be reasonable considering the work involved, but make sure you know what's included in that quote.

Honestly, paying that much feels crazy to me. It’s just putting together components, right? I think you can do it yourself for a lot less. Have you considered watching some tutorials? They can guide you step by step and it can actually be a fun project!

Right? You could save that $400 for a nice gaming accessory instead. There are plenty of resources out there!

Building high-end PCs requires a lot more attention to detail, especially with cable management and custom setups. While $400 does sound steep, the labor may reflect the complexity of the build. Building a straightforward system can take less than an hour, but detailed builds can take hours. Depends on the shop’s billing structure too!

Totally agree! If you're getting into complex setups, like liquid cooling, I'd say $400 isn't out of line at all.
