I'm considering buying a used RTX 30XX GPU, either a 3080 or 3090, but I'm a bit confused about PSU requirements. According to the manufacturer's site (ASUS), they recommend at least an 850W PSU for both the 3080 and 3090. However, I've read mixed opinions about 750W power supplies, with some users mentioning that it's sufficient while others have run into issues. My current PSU is an XFX XTR 750W Gold, which I've had for around 9 or 10 years. I'm planning to upgrade to an 850W PSU for a future build, but for now, I want to know if I can safely use my current one with either of those GPUs. My CPU is an i5 9600KF, and I've seen recommendations stating that my build would consume about 596W with a 3090. Given reports of problems with 750W and 850W PSUs, I'm a bit worried, especially since these GPUs are a significant investment for me. Any advice?

Just a heads-up - I'd recommend against using a 10-year-old PSU for a high-end GPU like the 3080 or 3090. Even if it seems to work initially, those older PSUs can fail under pressure. It might be worth the investment to get something newer and more reliable.
Many folks struggle with RTX 3080 and 3090 on 750W PSUs due to those pesky transient spikes. You shouldn't assume every 750W will work; it really depends on how the OCP is set up. Some older PSUs might not cut it, so be prepared to limit the power output in the Nvidia settings if necessary. If you can swing it, upgrading to an ATX 3.0 PSU would be wise to handle those spikes better.
If your PSU is of high quality, you should be okay. The main issue people face is with transient spikes that can trip the overcurrent protection (OCP) of the PSU. So, even though it says 750W, those spikes can cause it to shut down if it can't handle it. Just keep that in mind!
Good point! I've heard that many don't realize it's not just the total consumption that matters but also how well the PSU reacts to those spikes.
You should be fine if your PSU is good quality. But I’ve seen people experience shutdowns in demanding games. If you tend to play those, you might want to undervolt or consider an upgrade sooner rather than later.
I've got a similar setup with a 3090 on a Corsair 750W PSU, and I'm managing just fine. It really depends on the model and quality of the PSU. If it’s a reputable brand, it should handle it, but just be aware that some specific scenarios might push it to shut down.
That’s reassuring! I'm also following some tips about undervolting just to be safe.
Yikes! Definitely something to consider before plugging in an old PSU. Better safe than sorry!
