I recently inherited a Dell PowerEdge R540 server. I'm not sure how old it is, but it seems to be functioning well. I'm considering deploying the Veeam Hardened Repository ISO on it by adding some large 3.5-inch disks for up to 70TB of storage and a bit of RAM. My main question is: is this setup worth the effort?

There's definitely still life left in a Dell PowerEdge R540! It can handle tasks well, especially for home labs or non-production setups.
If you're serious about using it for production or enterprise-level work, I'd be cautious. You don't want to be in a position where you have to explain to higher-ups why their backups failed because of using old, unsupported hardware. For non-critical tasks, though, it's a solid choice!
As a secondary repository, it should definitely be fine.
