I built this PC about four years ago and it still performs well in the games I play, so I would rather upgrade it gradually than replace the entire system. The current specifications are an ASUS ROG Strix B550-E Gaming motherboard, Ryzen 7 5800X, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti with 8GB VRAM, 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and a 750W power supply.
I mainly play Battlefield 6 at 2560×1440 on a 144Hz monitor. In that game, the 8GB of VRAM seems to be fully used—and sometimes slightly exceeded—even when several graphics settings are set to medium or low.
Would it make sense to upgrade only the graphics card, or would the Ryzen 7 5800X, motherboard, RAM, or power supply hold back a newer GPU? I am considering cards such as the RTX 5070/5070 Ti or Radeon RX 9070/9070 XT. I am also thinking about increasing the system memory to 32GB, although DDR4 is becoming harder to find locally. Can a newer graphics card be installed in this older B550 system without major compatibility issues?

A graphics card upgrade makes sense here. The B550 motherboard and Ryzen 7 5800X are still perfectly capable for 1440p gaming, and the 750W power supply should be suitable for many current GPUs, assuming it is a decent-quality unit. You do not need to move to AM5 just to install a newer graphics card.
For your situation, a 16GB card such as an RX 9070, RX 9070 XT, or RTX 5070 Ti would give you more VRAM headroom and a substantial performance increase over the 3060 Ti. The best choice depends on local pricing, ray-tracing needs, and whether you prefer Nvidia's features or AMD's performance-per-dollar.
Going from 16GB to 32GB is worthwhile for newer games, even though it will not increase VRAM. It can reduce stuttering and prevent background applications from competing with the game for memory. A matched 2×16GB DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600 kit would be a sensible upgrade, and DDR4 is still common enough to find second-hand or through online retailers.
Before buying a GPU, check the exact power-supply model and the card manufacturer's recommended wattage. Also compare real game benchmarks at 1440p rather than choosing solely by the model number, since prices can vary dramatically between different versions of the same GPU.
Your processor should not be a major problem at 1440p, especially if your current limitation is clearly VRAM capacity. A newer GPU will generally be limited by the GPU itself before the 5800X becomes a serious issue at that resolution. You may see a larger CPU limitation in very high-refresh competitive games, but that is different from the VRAM problem you described.
Modern graphics cards are backward-compatible with the PCIe slot on the B550 board. You can install one without replacing the motherboard; there might be a small platform-related performance difference in some cases, but it is not a reason to rebuild the entire computer.
If the VRAM indicator is exceeding its limit, lower texture quality first and check whether the game is actually stuttering or simply reporting allocated memory. Texture settings are usually the biggest VRAM consumer. If you want higher settings and a longer useful lifespan, though, moving from an 8GB card to a 16GB model is a reasonable upgrade rather than buying another 8GB card.

The RX 9070 XT is noticeably cheaper where I live than most 5070 Ti models, so that one is currently looking like the better value. I was mainly worried that the older platform would prevent me from using the card properly.
