Hey everyone, I recently applied for a DevOps Team Leader position and after a chat with HR, they sent me a rather lengthy technical assessment. In my previous experiences with tech assessments for DevOps roles, they usually last 1-2 hours and focus on general knowledge and practical application of DevOps principles. However, this one is 4-5 hours long and seems very tailored to their business needs, asking for a complete architecture plan, budgeting roadmap, and specific solutions for team conflicts. I'm wondering if this is a common practice in the industry for similar roles, or is it a bit excessive?

Honestly, 5 hours of unpaid assessment feels like a waste of your time, regardless of the position. For a team leader role, basic conversation should suffice to gauge a candidate's knowledge rather than an extensive test.
Exactly! I don't think you need a massive technical challenge to understand if someone fits the role.
This whole situation raises some red flags. It sounds like they may be looking to push someone internal into the role who lacks the necessary experience. They're probably asking you to outline what an ideal candidate should do on the job.
As a DevOps manager, I believe they're really testing your soft skills alongside technical ones. They want to see if you can navigate internal dynamics and stay within budget—though I'm not sure how a lengthy technical task addresses this. Seems like an odd approach!
Exactly, I don't see how a 5-hour assessment correlates with assessing soft skills effectively.
Right? Sounds like they might need to rethink how they evaluate potential leaders.
It feels a bit like they want free consulting work tailored to their needs. A long assessment like that might raise concerns about their company culture.
Yeah, it really does paint the picture of a company that might not value your time. Definitely something to think about.

Totally agree! During interviews, I find that a good chat can reveal a lot more about someone's capabilities than lengthy assessments.
