I'm considering buying a used Alienware 17 gaming laptop for ₹30,000 (around $360 USD) and would love to get some honest opinions about its value. Here are the specs of the laptop:
- Intel i7 4th Gen processor
- GTX 980M 8GB graphics card
- 16GB of RAM
- NVMe SSD
The seller mentioned that the battery, screen, keyboard, and charger will be replaced, and it comes with a 3-month warranty. I plan to use it mainly for learning and video editing (mostly 1080p, possibly some light 2K), freelancing, data entry, and general productivity, along with occasional light gaming. I'm a bit concerned about the laptop's age (about 10 years), and I'm worried about its long-term reliability, potential overheating, and whether the CPU might bottleneck performance. Is this a good beginner machine for the price, or should I look for something newer? Any real-world experience with the GTX 980M or older Alienware models would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I'm not sure how it prices in your area, but $360 seems a bit steep for something like this unless you're in a region where laptops are scarce. In the US, that price is on the high side for a machine that's a decade old.
I wouldn't recommend it. Unless your local market is really bad, you could find much better options. The GTX 980M tends to run hot, and even if it's replaced, I doubt you'd get five years of use out of it. If the price was closer to $220, it might be worth considering, but $360 is too much.

What if I'm in India? Should I still steer clear?
