Is a Used i9-14900K a Good Choice for Music Production?

I'm currently using an i7-13700K on an Asus Prime Z790-A with 64GB of DDR5 RAM, mainly for music production, and it's been running great for the past three years. I'm planning to build a similar workstation and considering buying a used i9-14900K for $300. However, I've come across some negative feedback about this processor. Can anyone share their experiences and advice on whether getting the 14900K is a smart move or if I should steer clear?

If you do decide to go for the used i9, make sure you ask the seller for a receipt. All the K models should still be under warranty for five years. You'll want that for any potential RMA situations. $300 is a decent price, especially since more cores are beneficial for music production, but just be cautious with used buys!

Have you thought about getting a Core Ultra? But keep in mind that it requires a new motherboard, and your current setup might not be compatible with DDR5, which is what the Core Ultra supports. You might want to consider that before making a choice!

Yeah, switching to a Core Ultra would definitely mean overhauling your whole system. If you're already invested in DDR5, it might be better to stick with what you have.

Exactly! It's a big commitment to switch platforms for just a performance boost.

Buying used processors can be risky. The i9-14900K may have had issues with thermal degradation that can't be reversed if it's already occurred. If possible, try to find a new, open-box version—some places sell them for under $400. That way you avoid the worries of buying used.

I'm about to get the 14900KF myself from Amazon. I’d be wary of buying used, especially since you won’t always be able to return it if something goes wrong. New gives you the freedom to test and return if necessary, plus you often get a warranty. It’s worth spending a little extra for peace of mind.

There have been concerns about the 13th and 14th gen chips overheating. However, with the latest microcode update and BIOS fixes, that issue is mostly resolved, as long as you're buying new. Just ensure that you update your BIOS right away when you get the 14900K! You'll also need a robust cooling solution, ideally a high-performance AIO cooler since air coolers might not cut it unless you underclock the CPU.

Thanks for the tip! I definitely plan to update the BIOS, but it’s good to know about the cooling needs as well.
