I'm choosing between a used RTX 3080 Ti for $500 and a brand-new RX 9070 for $680. My main target is 4K gaming, though I may occasionally play at 1440p. The RX 9070 appears to be only about 13% faster in traditional performance, so the extra $180 would mainly be paying for a newer card, better efficiency, and 4GB more VRAM. How important are those advantages for 4K, and is the RX 9070 worth the premium? These are effectively my only realistic options because newer cards such as the RTX 5070 Ti are too expensive in my region.

The prices are high for both cards, but if these really are your only choices, the 9070 makes more sense long term. The 3080 Ti can still perform well, but $500 is a lot for a used card with 12GB of VRAM and no new-card warranty. At 4K, the additional VRAM on the 9070 is probably more valuable than the relatively small average performance difference suggests.
The main argument for the 3080 Ti is Nvidia’s upscaling and ray-tracing ecosystem. DLSS is still generally more mature than FSR, especially in demanding ray-traced games. That said, the 3080 Ti’s older architecture and 12GB memory make it a less appealing 4K purchase today, and the 9070’s image quality at reasonable FSR settings is good enough for many games.
I’d lean toward the RX 9070, mainly because 16GB of VRAM is a much more comfortable baseline for 4K gaming. The extra memory should help avoid situations where the 3080 Ti is technically fast enough but runs into VRAM limits. You also get a newer, generally cooler and more efficient card with a full warranty.
Before committing, I’d check whether a refurbished RTX 4070 or another used card is available locally. A tested 4070 around $469 could be a better middle ground because it has newer features and better efficiency, although it still only has 12GB of VRAM. If that sort of deal isn’t available, I’d choose the RX 9070 over the 3080 Ti for 4K and longer-term use.

Unfortunately, local pricing is unusually bad here, so cheaper alternatives like a 6800 or 6900 are closer to $400 rather than the $300 prices mentioned elsewhere.
