Is aiming for 1440p 120Hz realistic with my current setup?

I'm running a Ryzen 7 5700G with a Radeon RX 6600 XT and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. I got the system for free, and while it handles 1080p just fine, I recently noticed that upgrading these parts has become quite expensive due to shortages. I'm hesitant to spend almost $400 on an AM4 X3D processor when there are newer options at similar prices. I'm mainly looking to upgrade my graphics card and have my eye on a Radeon RX 9060 XT, 9070, or 9070 XT. Would the 9070 XT bottleneck due to my CPU, preventing me from hitting medium/high settings at 1440p with 120fps? The price jump between the cards is significant, so I want to make sure my investment won't let me down if I don't upgrade my entire rig. My gaming priorities are to run modern titles like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 smoothly, but I'd be happy with medium settings on older AAA games too. Is reaching this level of performance realistic with my current build? Or should I hold off for a more comprehensive upgrade?

You can actually achieve around 70 fps at 1440p with the 9060 XT in Cyberpunk using upscaling features. The 9070 XT could bump that up to about 100-110 fps. So it's not as demanding as it sounds. Your current card may just hold you back a bit, but 1440p should be fine.

That’s reassuring to hear! I guess it’s not impossible then, even on a tighter budget.

If your games aren’t overly demanding, you might find 1440p is quite achievable.

I have a similar setup with a 5600X and a 6750 XT at 1440p, and I occasionally struggle to hit 120Hz. A CPU upgrade might be necessary for a smoother experience.

Definitely. I’ve been weighing that option, but right now it just seems pricey. Maybe I’ll hold off for a better time to upgrade.

Don’t rush it! If you can hold out a bit longer, that might be the best route.

Yes, the graphics card plays a bigger role in achieving that 1440p performance than the CPU with your current setup. Upgrading to a 6750 XT or a 6800 XT could potentially push you into that 1440p range.

You're likely going to face some CPU bottlenecks trying to hit over 100 fps in newer games with your 5700G. Even a faster processor like the 5700X struggles to keep up, especially with titles like Cyberpunk 2077 where you might see around 70-85 fps.

Exactly! I noticed that performance too. I can hit 1440p at 120Hz with less demanding games, but I’m especially keen on playing newer titles with great performance.

With the 5700G and a 9070 XT, you'd be dealing with some limitations on frame rates. While still playable, you might miss out on the full potential of the card.

If you pair a 9070 XT with your 5700G, expect a CPU bottleneck in many games, especially if you're aiming for high frames. You'd likely see around 90-100 fps at 1440p in Cyberpunk on your rig but with a new CPU, you could max out performance and potentially hit 120 fps pretty consistently.

TechGuru88 -

Those numbers sound appealing! I just wish upgrading wasn't such a financial burden right now.

The 5700G is good, but for serious gaming at higher settings, a fast CPU is going to help you utilize that GPU much better.
