Is an AM4 CPU Sufficient for a 9070XT Build?

Hey everyone! I'm helping a friend of my dad's build a gaming PC with a budget of 1900 euros, which includes a new monitor. We're focusing on achieving 144Hz at 1440p since they mainly play Battlefield 6 and aren't too concerned with high graphical fidelity. I'm looking at a setup that totals around 1679 euros without a monitor, but I'm worried a good one might push us over budget. I've been considering using a 7800X3D with a 9070XT, and I found some reasonably priced 32GB RAM at 6400 MHz for about 190 euros.

However, I actually have 32GB of 4000MHz DDR4 RAM lying around. This makes me contemplate whether I should switch to an AM4 CPU like the 5700X3D instead. The person we're building for isn't looking to upgrade their system anytime soon, so I'm not too worried about future-proofing.

But here's my dilemma: does an AM4 CPU make sense with a powerful GPU like the 9070XT? I'm considering downgrading the entire build to focus on high frame rates at 1080p instead. Just for context, they're currently using a GTX 1050 with a pretty old Intel CPU, so I'm curious if consistent high frame rates at 1080p are truly what they're after. I'm also hesitant about pairing a high-end GPU with an AM4 system in 2025, but it would give us flexibility to invest in a solid OLED monitor. What do you all think?

Consider going with a 7700X! There are plenty of comparisons on YouTube that can help you see if it fits your needs. It could be a better long-term investment if you’re willing to make the jump to AM5.

If I stick with AM5, that might work, but the price difference isn't huge at around 50 euros more. I found a used one for 214 from China, but I'm hesitant to go that route for someone else's build.

I have a 5800X3D paired with a 9070XT and it has generally performed well. I did run into some low 99th percentile issues, but I think it might be due to optimization problems in the UE5 games I was playing. However, for most non-UE5 titles, the CPU and GPU combination works like a charm.

The 5800X3D is definitely a solid option if you're already on AM4, but it might not be the best value for a new build. Just keep that in mind!

Honestly, an AM4 with a 9070XT might feel a bit unbalanced in 2025. If you're aiming for high frame rates and longevity, you might want to look into AM5 options, especially if you can find a decent deal. Future upgradability might be worth considering, especially if the user isn't planning on upgrading soon, but we all know tech ages quickly!
