I'm a data science student with a powerful laptop, but it's quite heavy to lug around. I'm considering getting an iPad for note-taking and reading research papers since it would be easier to carry. I really don't want to buy another laptop, as that seems redundant. Has anyone tried coding on an iPad? I use Python in Jupyter Notebook currently and wonder if I could utilize online IDEs instead. What alternatives do you recommend?

The iPad is great for reading papers and taking notes, but coding on it can be tricky. You could try apps like Pythonista or even SSH into your main laptop for coding, but it might not be as seamless as you think. Have you looked into getting a lightweight laptop instead? Something like a MacBook Air or an ultrabook could offer a good balance between portability and coding capabilities.
What about Surface Pro tablets? Are they any good for this kind of work?

I agree, a MacBook might not be the best option depending on your classes. I've heard some teachers even say you can't complete assignments using one. Maybe consider brands like Lenovo or Dell instead?
