Hey everyone! I used to work as a Linux administrator but moved on to application support. Unfortunately, my current role doesn't offer much in terms of growth or new opportunities, so I'm thinking about going back to Linux admin. However, I've noticed there seem to be fewer job openings lately. I'm curious about the current job market for Linux administrators and what additional skills I should consider learning to boost my chances of landing a job in this field.

Linux support isn't a standalone role anymore; it's become part of a broader skill set. Many ex-Linux admins are now working as Cloud or Operations Engineers because modern roles require knowledge of CI/CD, DevOps practices, and indeed Linux is just one piece of the puzzle. Pure admin jobs are pretty rare these days. I would recommend looking into cloud technologies; they are becoming the norm.
Yeah, I hear you. It feels like if you're not versatile now, you could easily get left behind.
To stay relevant, you should consider the skills expected in today's market. Knowledge of Linux is great, but nowadays, you're expected to know how to manage cloud infrastructures as well. Time spent on traditional server admin is dwindling as companies move towards AWS or Azure. The demand for Linux skills is there, but the jobs have evolved quickly, often requiring a mix of different skills.
Exactly! When I used to be a server admin, I was deep into Linux, but now it's all about cloud solutions.
It’s sad that the traditional roles are disappearing, but this new direction does offer exciting opportunities!
Congrats on your new role as a senior Linux engineer! From my experience, there are still plenty of Linux jobs out there, but it’s crucial to expand your skillset beyond basic administration. Dive into automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, and Chef, and get familiar with container technologies like Docker and Kubernetes. Don't ignore cloud providers like AWS, GCP, or Azure either. Also, having a solid understanding of storage and network systems can really set you apart! Looking back, my career has shifted from traditional Linux admin to a mix of engineering roles, and branching out has been key for me.
Definitely agree! Companies want versatile professionals who can work with managed service providers and cloud technologies. It’s all about being adaptable in this day and age.
I feel you. I’ve had to adapt my skill set as well; the landscape has changed a lot!
Totally on point! My previous role was all about traditional Unix tasks, but now I'm transitioning to application support in a cloud environment. Makes you rethink your career path!
