Is buying an RTX 5070 Ti now a mistake, or should I wait?

I'm considering upgrading from an RTX 4060 Ti 16GB for gaming at 2560×1440 on an OLED monitor. My system has 32GB of DDR5 memory and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. World of Warcraft is easy for this setup, but I recently started playing Gears of War: E-Day and also play Battlefield 5. I may want to play GTA 6 later as well. I'm specifically interested in NVIDIA and am willing to pay more for one, so please keep recommendations focused on NVIDIA cards. The RTX 5070 Ti is available now, but I'm unsure whether to buy it or wait three to five months—or potentially longer—for a newer generation or a refresh.

Your current system is already excellent for 1440p, and your main games don’t necessarily require an immediate upgrade. Since future pricing and release dates are uncertain, there isn’t a guaranteed perfect buying window. I’d set a maximum price you’re willing to pay for a 5070 Ti and wait until one appears near that number; otherwise, keep the 4060 Ti and reassess when a genuinely worthwhile NVIDIA option becomes available.

The main reason I’m sticking with NVIDIA is reliability from my past experience. I know there are cheaper alternatives, but I’d rather pay a premium for a card and software ecosystem I’m already comfortable with.

If you can comfortably afford the card and need the performance now, buying isn’t unreasonable. Nobody can reliably predict future GPU prices, and the RTX 5070 Ti’s roughly $750 MSRP has turned into around $1,100 for many models. There’s also no guarantee that a 5070 Ti refresh will actually arrive, especially with current memory-supply problems. The next major generation is probably more than three to five months away, so waiting only makes sense if you’re happy to keep using the 4060 Ti.

This is a pretty rough time to upgrade because NVIDIA cards are selling well above their intended prices. The next generation may not arrive until next year or later, and even then availability could be poor or launch pricing could be extremely high. If you find a 5070 Ti close to MSRP, it would be much easier to justify; at about $1,100, I’d either wait or only buy if you really want the upgrade right now.

I passed on one earlier because I didn’t need it at the time, and now I’m mostly annoyed by how much prices have gone up. There’s no guarantee the next launch will be any better.
