Is DDR4 RAM a Smart Choice for My Future PC Build?

I'm about to build my first PC, but my budget only allows me to go with a DDR4 motherboard and RAM. I'm a bit concerned about whether DDR4 will feel outdated in the next few years, specifically around 2027 to 2028, since I probably won't be able to afford a full upgrade (CPU, motherboard, and RAM) anytime soon. Will DDR4 still be good enough for the next few years?

Honestly, your CPU might feel outdated before your RAM does, so focus on getting a decent one. If you're into just casual games or esports, DDR4 should serve you well enough for the time being.

Exactly, I just need something to handle my gacha games and occasional esports.

It really depends on what GPU and CPU you plan to use. If you pick a solid CPU like the 5700X3D or 5800X3D, you should be fine for a few years, as they'll handle most GPUs at decent resolutions. Just be wary, though, those CPUs aren't cheap at the moment!

I'm caught between the 5700X and the 13400F or 14400F since they cost about the same here.

DDR4 is being phased out, but it will still perform well for quite a while. Just like DDR3, it’ll keep doing its job even when DDR5 rolls out. So, you shouldn't worry too much about it becoming obsolete too quickly!

Yeah, and I bet over half of Steam users will still be on DDR4 even by then.

Just keep an eye on the motherboard and CPU compatibility. You want to make sure they at least support PCIe 4.0 now, as older boards may still be on PCIe 3.0, which can limit performance down the line.
